How to use it
- Choose the area shape and enter its measurements.
- Enter the gravel depth, or tap a common depth.
- Pick the gravel type and how you plan to buy it: by volume, by weight or in bags.
- Check What to Buy, then add the area to your project if it is one part of a bigger job.
Formula and assumptions
- Area = length × width (or π × (diameter ÷ 2)² for a circle)
- Volume = area × depth
- Volume with waste = volume × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
- Weight = volume with waste × density
- Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27; 1 cubic yard = 0.764554857984 m³
Order amounts always round up, never down. Prices apply to the rounded amount, in the unit your supplier sells by. See the methodology for constants and indicative densities.
Example
A 10 ft × 20 ft path, 3 in deep, crushed gravel, 10% waste, ordered in half-yard steps:
- Before waste: 1.85 cu yd (1.42 m³)
- With waste: 2.04 cu yd (1.56 m³)
- Suggested order: 2.5 cubic yards
Questions
How many tons of gravel are in a cubic yard?
It depends on the stone, its grading and moisture. Many gravels fall roughly between 1.3 and 1.7 tonnes per cubic metre. Ask your supplier for their figure and enter it under Material density for a better weight estimate.
Is a ton the same as a tonne?
No. A US short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18 kg). A metric tonne is 1,000 kg (about 2,204.6 lb). This calculator always shows which one it means.
Why is my suggested order more than the calculated amount?
Suppliers usually sell in steps, such as half or whole cubic yards, and some have a minimum load. The order is always rounded up so you don't run short. You can change the step and minimum under Supplier order rules.
How deep should driveway gravel be?
It depends on soil, traffic and how many layers you use. The depth buttons are only shortcuts. For driveways that carry vehicles, follow local guidance or ask a qualified contractor.
