Waste allowance5%
%

Suggested starting point: 5%. You can set it to 0.

Waste covers spillage, uneven ground, settling and cutting. The right amount depends on the material, your site and how it is installed. No single percentage suits every project.

Supplier order rulesorder step 1

Example supplier increment. Check your supplier's ordering rules. Orders round up to this step; leave blank for no rounding.

Optional. Some suppliers have a minimum delivery.

How to use it

  1. Enter the lawn measurements, or a known area.
  2. Check the roll and pallet coverage against your supplier's sizes.
  3. Choose rolls, full pallets, or pallets plus rolls.
  4. Add a little waste for cutting around beds, curves and edges.

Formula and assumptions

  • Area with waste = area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)
  • Rolls = round up (area with waste ÷ roll coverage)
  • Full pallets = round up (area with waste ÷ pallet coverage)
  • Pallets + extra rolls: whole pallets = round down (area with waste ÷ pallet coverage); extra rolls = round up (leftover area ÷ roll coverage)
  • If those extra rolls would together cover at least one pallet's coverage, one more pallet is ordered instead

Order amounts always round up, never down. Prices apply to the rounded amount, in the unit your supplier sells by. See the methodology for constants and indicative densities.

Example

A 30 ft × 40 ft lawn with 5% waste, using 10 sq ft rolls:

  • Before waste: 1,200 sq ft (111.48 m²)
  • With waste: 1,260 sq ft (117.06 m²)
  • Suggested order: 126 rolls

Questions

How much does one roll of sod cover?

It varies. Many rolls or slabs cover around 10 sq ft, but sizes differ by supplier and region. Enter the coverage from your supplier.

How many square feet are on a pallet of sod?

Pallets often hold roughly 400 to 700 sq ft, depending on the farm. The default is a common figure. Change it to match your supplier.

Can I buy part of a pallet?

Some suppliers sell single rolls and some only sell full pallets. Choose Full pallets or Pallets + extra rolls to match yours.

Why does it suggest so many extra rolls?

The pallets + extra rolls split is based only on the coverage sizes entered, not on supplier prices, bulk discounts or pallet rules. It is not optimized for cost. A large leftover can mean many rolls: with 500 sq ft pallets and 10 sq ft rolls, 990 sq ft is 1 pallet + 49 rolls. Compare that with your supplier's price for a second pallet.
